This section includes some reviews of book on writing.
These reviews are opinions: if we do not like a book, it does not necessary mean that it is not a useful book and vice versa.
Building Better Plots Robert Kernen
This is a great book - it is written in simple, friendly language and is filled with writing
exercises, advice, examples, and quizzes. It is well organised too and discusses areas such as subplots, action, characters,
and structuring your plot. This book is perfect for everybody, from those who want to write to those editing their work before
sending it to publishers.
Free Your Creative Spirit Vivianne and Christopher Crowley
Although this book is not specifically aimed at writers it is clear to see why writers would
find it useful, and it does actually include a chapter on writing, and includes many references to it. The book contains many
suggestions of activities to do to free your creativity, mainly through relaxation. For example, one of the suggestions is
that you do something fun, anything, as long as it is something you enjoy. Even the chapters not specifically aimed at writers
are useful to help you relax, generate ideas, and perhaps to make you look at your writing in a new way.
How to Write and Sell a Book Proposal Stella Whitelaw
This little book is crammed full of useful information about writing a synopsis, editing,
and jargon. It is written in a simple, friendly way making it easy to use. However, this book was published in 2000, and it
is therefore possible that some of the details are no longer correct, such as contact addresses. In spite of
this, I think this book would still be useful to many writers.
The Pocket Muse Monica Wood
I love this book; it's full of pictures, quotes, and suggestions
all designed to generate new idea. The suggestions range from a few words to a few pages in length and are
very varied in their topics. If you're stuck for ideas this book is a gift from God. It might not help you write a novel but
it'll definately give you a few ideas.
Write Your Own...Thrillers Pie Corbett
This book is aimed at kids but I still really like it. It starts with simple things like what
a thriller is before explaining about how to hook the reader, and edit and publish your work. This book also has writing tips
scattered throughout it which I think could generate ideas for writers of all ages.
